The health-conscious town of Hafnarfjörður has decided to launch a new offensive in the chess match and continue from where it left off this spring.  From Saturday, 17th October, a online chess tournament will be offered for all primary school-aged children on Saturdays at 11 a.m. This will run for the time being, at least while other sports and leisure activities for the pupils are suspended.

The steps to take part (very simple):

  1. Create an account on https://www.chess.com/ (free)
  2. Become a member of the group “Hafnarfjörður - schools”
  3. You can register for the tournaments up to 60 minutes before they start. The tournaments are also advertised on the group's homepage on chess.com.

It's best to complete the first two steps as soon as possible. We recommend that you use a regular desktop or laptop computer, as the chess.com app does not work for matches.

Online chess tournament every Saturday from 11 am to 12 pm.

The links on the Hafnarfjörður-skólar page on chess.com are updated weekly.

Chess improves schooling

A large body of research exists on how chess strengthens pupils and enhances schoolwork. These studies convincingly demonstrate what a powerful tool the regular and systematic practice of chess in schools is for pupils and for the schoolwork in general. Various analyses exist on how chess strengthens different skills in individuals' learning across various fields. Examples of these skills include increased learning capacity, concentration, imagination and visual memory, foresight, decision-making, analysis of problem-solving tasks, abstract thinking, planning, multifaceted solutions, perseverance, and social connections and cohesion.
