Library's opening ceremony today – a new chapter in a century-old history

News

The new Hafnarfjörður Library will be officially opened at Fjörður today, Thursday, 13th August. The opening ceremony will be from 4 pm to 6 pm. All are welcome.

A new chapter in the history of the library

The Hafnarfjörður Library is holding its opening celebration today at its new location, on the second floor of the Firði shopping centre.

The library is no longer just a place for books and loans, but a versatile space for reading, learning, working, creating and socialising. It includes a recording studio for music and podcasts, workspaces and studios, as well as facilities where children and adults can create and share their own content.

The Library of Hafnarfjörður receives around 125,000 visits annually, and it is expected that this will increase with new premises and expanded services.

The library further enhanced

„We are now writing a new chapter in the history of this museum, which is over a century old. The museum has preserved stories, shared knowledge and given us insight into new worlds. And now we are strengthening it even further. A new home. A new beginning to a great adventure,“ says Thórður Þórarinsson, the mayor.

He says the aim is for the new library to become a fixture in the lives of Hafnarfjörður residents.

„We stand here in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. We aim for the library to become a living house for people of all ages – a community hub for the people of Hafnarfjörður. This house comes to life when we make it our own. We ask you, the people of Hafnarfjörður, to give it the life it deserves.“

Major transformation in the centre of Hafnarfjörður

The relocation of the library is part of extensive changes to the Firði and the centre of Hafnarfjörður. The changes at the Firði are the largest single construction project in the centre of Hafnarfjörður for decades.

The City of Hafnarfjörður bought the premises for the library for 1.1 billion krónur. With the move, the library will become an even more visible part of daily life in the town centre and an important part of the development taking place there.

Opening ceremony 4–6 pm today

There will be an open house at Hafnarfjörður Library from 4 pm to 6 pm, with a family-friendly programme on offer:

  • 16:15 and 17:15: Gunni Helga with a storytelling session and a reading from a new book
  • 4–6 pm: Art workshop for children
  • An open house where guests will have the opportunity to see the new library for the people of Hafnarfjörður.

All are welcome!
