The City of Hafnarfjörður operates eight football pitches, so-called KSÍ pitches, at all the city's primary schools. At its meeting this morning, the Hafnarfjörður City Council decided that this summer the rubber crumb surfacing will be replaced on all of these pitches. The estimated cost of the project is around 15 million krónur. Although it has not been scientifically proven that the crumb causes health damage, there is considered to be strong reason to err on the side of caution for everyone who uses the pitches for leisure, sport and recreation. Hafnarfjörður municipality, FH and Haukar also operate two large pitches; at Ásvellir and in Kaplakriki. Both pitches meet current quality standards; the turf on them is newer and certified.
