Over 5,400 children benefit from sports grant: First allocation

The first of two allocations took place yesterday. Thirteen clubs received a total of 13.2 million krónur in the grant. The general consensus is that children are returning to sports clubs following the Covid pandemic.

The sports grants are for athletes under the age of 18 from the member clubs of the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association (ÍBH). The grant presentation took place yesterday, on Thursday, 27 June 2024, with a ceremony at the Aluminium Plant in Straumsvík.

An agreement is in effect for the years 2022-2024 between the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association, Rio Tinto and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður. Rio Tinto and the City of Hafnarfjörður each pay 12 million króna this year. Grant allocations are made in June and December based on applications from the clubs and in accordance with the terms of the agreement. A total of 55% was awarded this time based on the number of members who train regularly in the clubs, that is, at least twice a week for four months of the year.

In 2023, support was applied for for 4,873 children, and in 2024, support was applied for for 5,419 children, an increase of 546 children year-on-year. Applications were invited from member associations of the IBA and 13 associations applied for support from the fund.
