Wednesday, 12th October is dedicated to prevention. The Prevention Day was first held in the autumn of 2006 and is dedicated to some sound advice that can keep children and teenagers away from drugs, advice that is relevant to all families in the country. The day is held at the initiative of the President of Iceland in cooperation with the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities, the Icelandic Olympic and Sports Association, the Icelandic Youth League, the Association of Icelandic Scouts, the City of Reykjavík, the University of Iceland and Reykjavík University.

Icelandic research shows that teenagers who spend at least an hour a day with their families are less likely to start using drugs.  Similarly, research shows that young people who take part in sports and other organised youth activities are much less likely to fall victim to drugs. Thirdly, research shows that the longer young people wait to start drinking alcohol, the less likely they are to use drugs later on. The findings are based on research by scientists from the University of Iceland and the University of Reykjavík, who have for many years studied the risk behaviour of young people, and have attracted international attention.

Year 9 pupils at Öldutúnsskóli were among those who took an active part in today with project work and lively discussions – see here
