Prevention Day
Schools in Hafnarfjörður have taken part in the day, with the focus on Year 9 pupils.
Today, Friday 2nd October, is Prevention Day, an important part of local authorities' preventative work concerning alcohol and drug issues among young people. Schools in Hafnarfjörður have taken part in the day, with the focus on Year 9 pupils. Pupils work on the prevention activities and are provided with various materials to familiarise themselves with, as well as further information about the project on
www.forvarnardagur.is (Opens in a new browser tab) . There is, for example, a video featuring positive role models who have, for instance, never started drinking alcohol, such as Páll Óskar, Ragnhildur Steinunn and Jón okkar Jónsson.
On Prevention Day, pupils in schools discuss their ideas and suggestions regarding innovations and changes to youth and sports activities, family life, and other areas that can strengthen preventative measures. The students' ideas and proposals are then compiled into a report which is published on the day's website,
www.forvarnardagur.is . Students are then given the opportunity to take part in a treasure hunt on the websites of sports and youth organisations, with prizes on offer.
Prevention Day is held at the initiative of the President of Iceland.
The main aim of Prevention Day is to highlight the most effective ways to prevent young people from falling victim to alcohol and drugs. The most prominent of these are participation in organised sports and leisure activities, and spending time with the family.
