Avian influenza has been detected in the capital region. The council's environmental health service has contracted Reykjavik Animal Services to remove dead birds. Pest controllers will need the location and photographs.
Avian flu in the capital region
The municipal health authority has contracted the Reykjavík Animal Services to receive notifications of dead birds and to remove them in the areas of the health authorities of Garðabær, Hafnarfjörður, Kópavogur, Mosfellsbær and Seltjarnarnes. Animal Services Reykjavik has pest controllers on hand to remove the birds.
People are advised to keep away from bird carcasses, but you can call the Animal Services on 822 7820 from 9am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm at weekends, or send an email to the address. dyr@reykjavik.is. The Food Standards Agency declared a state of emergency on 3 December due to avian influenza in a flock of breeding turkeys. It has since also been detected in two cats and in wild birds. The agency advises anyone who keeps poultry or other birds to maintain the highest level of biosecurity when caring for their birds. The Food Standards Agency also recommends that people do their utmost to prevent their cats from coming into contact with birds.
