The combined housing support from the municipality and the Housing and Building Authority has been increased from 90,200 krónur to 100,000 krónur per month. The decision was made at a meeting of the Family Council on 20 August and then at a meeting of the Town Council on 28 August. The decision is retroactive from 1 July.
Based on a decision of the Althingi
A bill to increase housing benefits was passed by the Althingi at the end of May 2024. The changes came into effect on 1 July, increasing the basic amounts of general housing benefits from Húsbót by a quarter, according to a notification from the Housing and Building Authority. In addition, the asset limit was raised from 6.5 million krónur to 12.5 million.
Specific housing support is financial assistance in addition to general housing benefit. The support is for individuals and families in the private rented sector with low incomes and a heavy burden of living costs.
July corrected
The payments received by tenants on 1 September for special housing support for August were calculated based on the new agreement, and therefore the correction only covers the month of July.
The adjustment to the Special Housing Support for July will be paid out to those receiving support on the general market. The adjustment will be applied as a reduction to the rent in October for those in social rented housing with the local authority.
