News

Phones banned in all Hafnarfjörður primary schools in April!

The Education Committee of Hafnarfjörður has approved a phone-free period in all of the borough's primary schools next April. The proposal means that pupils in years 1-10 will not be allowed to have their phones with them during school hours within the school premises. The minutes of the education committee meeting of 21 February state that this proposal is supported by the youth council.

The parents' council's booking reads as follows:

„The Parents“ Council for Primary School Children thanks the Education Committee for welcoming the idea of a phone-free period in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools and for beginning work to examine all aspects of the matter. We are confident that a phone-free period will increase pupils' well-being and concentration, and greatly improve the school atmosphere. It is clear that for a phone-free period to be a success, facilities and recreational activities for pupils must be improved. A phone-free period in April is a good start and hopefully the first step towards guidelines for Hafnarfjörður's primary schools.“

Want a more positive school atmosphere

With this approval, the education council is responding to requests for phone-free breaks. It is hoped that this measure will make the school atmosphere in the town even more positive. The aim is to provide increased recreational activities within the schools, fun games and organised activities during break times. The next steps are to work out with school authorities, staff and pupils how the break will be structured.
