The Minister of Health launched „Walk to School“ in Hafnarfjörður this morning.

This morning, the launch ceremony for the 2017 'Let's Walk to School' campaign took place at Víðistaðaskóli in Hafnarfjörður. This is the 11th time the project has been held. The programme began with Headteacher Hrönn Bergþórsdóttir welcoming everyone, followed by speeches from Lárus L. Blöndal, President of the ISI, Ottar Proppé, Minister of Health, and Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Chair of the Hafnarfjörður Education Board, gave short speeches in which they emphasised the importance of using active travel methods to and from school and of paying close attention to the road safety of young road users. 

The opening ceremony took place this morning. Let's walk to school 2017 at Víðistaðaskóli in Hafnarfjörður, and this is the 11th time the project has taken place. The programme began with Headteacher Hrönn Bergþórsdóttir welcoming everyone, followed by speeches from Lárus L. Blöndal, President of the Icelandic Sports Federation, Ottar Proppé, Minister of Health, and Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Chair of the Hafnarfjörður Education Council, delivered short speeches in which they emphasised the importance of using active modes of transport to and from school and of paying close attention to the road safety of young road users. 

The students then performed a fine singing performance to the accompaniment of a guitar, and among the audience in the hall were smartly dressed police officers. After the music and speeches, the project was formally launched with a symbolic walk by students, guests, staff and partners through Víðistaðatún in glorious sunshine.

The organisations behind the project in Iceland are the Icelandic Olympic and Sports Association, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, the National Commissioner of Police, the Civil Defence Association Landsbjörg, the Transport Authority and the national association Home-School. Walk to School is also part of  European Week of Sport  which takes place the week of 23-30 September and #BeActive the initiative.
