The Walk Against Violence today

The walk will be held in the name of Ólöf Tara Harðardóttir, a campaigner for the rights of women and girls and for equality, at the annual UN Women Walk in Iceland today, 25 November. The walk will start at Arnarhóll at 17:00. To mark the occasion, the hearts in Hafnarfjörður at Standgatan and in the Christmas village are orange today.

The Walk of Light marks the start of UN Women's 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, which this year focuses on digital gender-based violence. The theme is „End digital violence against all women and girls“.“ (Ending Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls).

The event's description states that technological advancements have created new spaces where violence and harassment thrive unchecked. „Nearly 2 in 3 women worldwide have experienced digital gender-based violence. Digital violence has consequences – serious consequences. It has a profound impact on the health, well-being and opportunities of victims to participate in society.“

The family of Ólafur Tara leads the march, along with Stella Samúelsdóttir, Executive Director of UN Women in Iceland, and representatives of Bjarkarhlíð, The SlutWalk, the Icelandic branch of Amnesty International, The Women's Rights Association of Iceland, the Women's Refuge, Rótin, Stígamót, Vitund, and ÖBÍ.

We at the City of Hafnarfjörður join UN Women in Iceland and encourage everyone to attend and stand with survivors.
