Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Culture and Commerce, visited the Hafnarfjörður Library recently. The occasion was that Maciej Duszynski, Poland's acting ambassador to Iceland, wanted to show her the impressive collection and discuss the importance of promoting Polish culture in Iceland.
Sylwia Zajkowska, Librarian of the Polish Section, Hugrún Margrét, Head of the Children's and Young People's Department, and Sigrún Guðnadóttir, Director of the Library, led Lilja and Maciej around the library in costumes, as it was Halloween at the Library that day.
They looked at the collection and got information.
„They were given a tour of the entire museum and we told them about the upcoming events,“ says Sigrún, reiterating the importance of the Polish work at the museum. „We discussed what could be done in the future to strengthen cultural ties between Poland and Iceland,“ says Sigrún.
The library in Hafnarfjörður is at the forefront of promoting Polish cultural heritage. Its activities have grown in recent years. The selection of Polish books at the library is excellent and among the best in the country. There are numerous cultural events.
An important part of society
The aim of the Polish programme at the museum is to enable people to be part of the community without being separated from it. Sylwia Zajkowska has recently taken over the Polish programme at the library. The Polish National Day will then be held at the library on 9 November. There will be patriotic concerts, a meeting with Polish authors, the legend of the Rzeszów Dragon will be performed, and there will be a treasure hunt with the tracks of Polish animals!
