This week, a presentation was given on the purpose and role of civil defence, both nationally and in the capital region. The initiative is part of an effort to introduce civil defence to the new Civil Defence Committee for the capital region. Two meetings were held with the same agenda to give as many people as possible the opportunity to attend the presentation.

Major projects, response plans, work plans, risk assessment, exercises, training and testing

The development of the civil defence system in accordance with the law, the role of the Capital Area Emergency Operations Committee, the role of civil defence committees, and the role of representatives on the civil defence committee were reviewed. The roles of the municipalities' emergency management boards were also reviewed, as the municipalities in the capital region have been operating Emergency governments from 2012. The emergency management bodies have proven their importance many times over the years, and most recently during the pandemic. Major projects of recent years were also reviewed, including COVID-19, wildfires, response planning, and more. Also upcoming projects such as the creation of an operational plan, risk assessments, exercises, training, and testing of response plans, to name but a few.

The Chief Constable of the Capital Region, Halla Bergþóra Björnsdóttir, together with Assistant Chief Constable Ásgeir Þór Ásgeirsson and the Executive Director of the Civil Protection Committee, Birgir Finnsson and Head of Civil Protection for the Capital Region, Þóra Kristín Ásgeirsdóttir, delivered the training.
