Contract for Transport in the Capital Region

The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður, along with five other municipalities in the capital region, has signed a landmark agreement with the Icelandic government on an ambitious fifteen-year development of transport infrastructure and public transport in the capital region. 

Hafnarfjörður municipality, together with five other municipalities in
the capital region, Garðabær, Kópavogur, Mosfellsbær, Reykjavík and Seltjarnarnes,
have signed a landmark agreement with the Icelandic government on ambitious
the development of transport infrastructure and public transport in the capital region to
fifteen years. The Hafnarfjörður Town Council approved at its meeting on 16 October
the previous, pending agreement on the planning and financing of the development
on transport infrastructure until 2033.

The agreement entails a shared vision and
holistic thinking for the planning area. The aim is to increase safety, improve
transport for all modes of travel and reduce delays, significantly enhance public transport and
reduce pollution from particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions in order to stand
for the climate objectives of government and local authorities. Among other things, it is planned
for significantly increased funding to improve traffic flow and road safety
around and through Hafnarfjörður.

Objective
The agreement has four parts:

The total funding for transport projects during the period is approximately 120 billion. The state will contribute 45 billion and local authorities 15 billion. It is anticipated that dedicated funding will cover 6 billion kr. During the period, 52.2 billion will be invested in trunk roads, 49.6 billion for the infrastructure of the Borgarlína and public transport, 8.2 billion for pedestrian and cycle paths, footbridges and underpasses, and 7.2 billion for improved traffic management and specific safety measures. Work will also immediately begin on implementing digital traffic management in the capital region.
