Eighteen young people from Norway came to visit Hafnarfjörður recently, accompanied by a distinguished entourage. The youth council from Sveio in Hordaland, Norway, contacted
Hafnarfjörður Youth Council last year and led the delegation, together with the mayor of Sveio, a small community of 3,600 people, on a visit to Hafnarfjörður from 28 to 31 March. Purpose
The purpose of the trip was to see the country and its people, as well as to visit the Hafnarfjörður Youth Council and find out about its activities and projects. The two groups met on a work and educational day on Friday, 29th March, where they introduced themselves and their work, as well as visiting the President of Iceland at Bessastaðir, swimming in the Suðurbær swimming pool, and spending free time together at the Hamar youth centre and elsewhere.

Informal learning – Non-formal education

Staff and young people of the youth councils see this visit as an opportunity for the groups to learn and gain new experience and knowledge outside the classroom. The so-called
Informal learning is conducive to personal, social and professional development.
of the individuals in the project, as well as to enhance the active participation and social awareness of the participants. Non-formal education is defined as learning that participants acquire outside
traditional learning environment (e.g. not in a classroom). Learning that participants
pursued with interest and of their own free will (not compulsory). These are all factors that increase young people's chances of employment later in life.
