German MPs visit the City of Hafnarfjörður

A warm and constructive discussion took place when members of the German parliament and their entourage visited the City of Hafnarfjörður this week. The German MP Ingo Gädechens led the group, which included three other German MPs, a secretary and an interpreter. The group was also met by members of Cuxhaven Twinning Association Hafnarfjörður.

Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir welcomed the group and a conversation began in Bookless Bungalow-the town hall. Sigurjón Ólafsson, Director of the Service and Development Department, presented the town and went over the main opportunities and challenges.

The German delegation planned to hold wide-ranging meetings with the Speaker of the Althingi, the Ombudsman, the Police Commissioner and the Energy Authority. The delegation included, for example, representatives from the Goethe-Institut and the German Teachers' Association. The trip also included a visit to Greenland.

The MPs were from northern Germany, and Hafnarfjörður is a twin town of Cuxhaven in Germany. The twinning was formally established in the autumn of 1988, and that relationship has been very active in many ways ever since.
