Tyre rubber removed from football pitches
Last spring, the Hafnarfjörður Town Council decided to replace the crumb rubber on the football pitches at four of the town's primary schools and lay new, infill-free artificial grass at three of the schools. The work was put out to tender and the company Metatron, which is headquartered in Hafnarfjörður, submitted the lowest bid. Today, Mayor Haraldur L. Haraldsson signed a contract for the project with Páll Halldórsson, Managing Director of Metatron.
Work to remove the old rubber crumb began at Hraunvallar School today. The aim is to have all the rubber crumb removed from school grounds before schools start in the autumn. The new material being used as a replacement is a certified rubber surface that meets all standards. Work on the three pitches – Hvaleyrarskóli, Setbergsskóli and Öldutúnsskóli – where the artificial grass will be completely replaced, will begin at the end of August and is scheduled for completion by October at the latest. These pitches will be free of rubber infill, but a rubber mat will be laid under the artificial grass to ensure better durability, stability and quality.
The town authorities are extremely pleased with how quickly it has been possible to
complete this task and celebrate getting rid of the tyre tracks from the fields. On
