The Hafnarfjörður Town Council proposes that formal negotiations be commenced with the State Real Estate Agency regarding the town's purchase of the state's share in St. Joseph's Hospital.

Over the past few terms, discussions have taken place between the City of Hafnarfjörður and the Ministry of Finance regarding the future of the St. Joseph's Hospital buildings, as the properties were put up for sale last year. Among other things, discussions between the town and the state have centred on the town authorities' request for a special pre-qualification committee to be established to determine the future use of the properties. This request was rejected by the state. Following this, the Hafnarfjörður City Council now intends to request formal negotiations to purchase the state's share. This would ensure that the city has control over the properties and can guarantee they are put to active use for the benefit of the local community. The proposal will be put forward for discussion and a decision at the town council meeting on Wednesday, 20 January – see the full proposal.
