Over 300 students train in dance at the Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography. The school's magnificent dance performance on 1st May prompted the mayor to pay a visit and learn about its work.

Popular dance school in Hafnarfjörður

„The show was magnificent; it was a real pleasure to see how much the students, who were of all ages, put themselves out,“ says Mayor Valdimar Víðisson, who paid a visit recently to learn about the operations of the Hafnarfjörður School of Ballet. Over 300 students train in dance there. „It's fantastic to see how the school is growing and thriving; a really professional and dynamic operation is going on here.“

Dancing for over 30 years

The Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography began its activities in January 1994. At that time, 12 students were enrolled at the school. Last year, that number had grown to around 320, which shows that the school offers a diverse, ambitious and inspiring dance education, just as its aims state.

The School of Dance is unassuming. It is located at Helluhrauni 16-18, next to Bónus in Hraun West. You go up the stairs, where three spacious dance studios and changing facilities await. The summer programme is now getting under way.

Kata Vignisdóttir, the headteacher, her daughter Matthea and Erna Matthíasdóttir, the deputy headteacher, welcomed the mayor.

A wonderful summer ahead

The summer term began on 13 May and ends on 14 June. Week-long dance and drama courses for children aged 7-13 then begin in mid-June and run until the end of August. A group of students, TEAM LDH, the school's competition team, is also heading to the qualifying round of the international competition, the Global Dance Open, on 25th May.

„Summer is wonderful. The schedule is different then. Summer term, dance and drama courses, and training for the competition. The groups are full and everything is buzzing with life,“ says Kata.

„We then start the autumn term at the beginning of September,“ she says. „We are pleased with the collaboration with the City of Hafnarfjörður and are planning to hold an open day in the autumn so that the people of Hafnarfjörður can see what we do.“

Yes, dance enriches life. No question.
