Hafnarfjörður is ready for the blackout
Giant glasses have been put in place at the Hamar and at Keili. Solar eclipse glasses are waiting for you at the library, the swimming pools, the customer service centre and the folk museum. It has been ensured that the street lighting will not switch on automatically when it gets dark. Hafnarfjörður is ready for the total eclipse on Wednesday, 12th August.
The Dark Age 12 August
The time is drawing near for the moon to pass in front of the sun, and total darkness will be visible from Hafnarfjörður for the first time in centuries. The town's preparations are in the final stages. The weather plays a major role, as it always does in Icelandic history – we're crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. The total eclipse is on Wednesday, 12th August from 16:47. It will peak at 17:48.
The giant glasses have appeared
The giant solar eclipse glasses are in place on At the Hammer and by the Keilis golf course. This gives residents and visitors the opportunity to step into the glasses, take photos and have a fun memory of this special day.
The Hammer, Ástjörn by Ásvellir and the area by the Keilir golf course are the places where we can enjoy the darkness together.
- Toilets are available at Flensburg School and inside Ásvellir.
The total eclipse will be visible for up to 68 seconds in Hafnarfjörður, depending on location. The partial eclipse begins at approximately 16:47 and the maximum totality will be at approximately 17:48.
The lights will be turned off.
It suddenly darkens in the middle of the day as the moon covers the sun. Hafnarfjörður has therefore taken special care to ensure that the town's street lighting does not react to the darkness by switching on automatically. This allows the darkness to be appreciated – and you to enjoy this unique event.
Eclipse glasses around town
The town is offering solar eclipse glasses to all children in Hafnarfjörður, aged 17 and under. It is important to remember that Don't look Straight into the sun without approved eclipse glasses.
- The glasses are waiting for you at Ásvallalaug, the Hafnarfjörður Library, the Folk Museum, Hafnarborg and the municipal service centre.
Yes, these are certified eclipse glasses. But as our one true Star-Sævar says: We only need them when we're looking directly at the sun.
Thousands at Björk's solar eclipse festival
A great atmosphere is expected in Hafnarfjörður on this unique day. In addition to those gathering at good vantage points in the town, thousands of guests are expected at Echolalia – the Solar Eclipse Festival by Björk and Smekkleysa in Víðistaðatún.
