Hörðuvellir Nursery School is looking to hire a special needs teacher/occupational therapist for a 100% position.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with ambition and a keen interest in the role.

The position is available from 1 October 2026, or by arrangement.

Kindergartens in Hafnarfjörður have introduced improved working hours, which involve a 36-hour working week for all staff. Staff in the Association of Playgroup Teachers and the Association of Occupational Therapists have voted for an arrangement whereby their academic year is comparable to that of primary school teachers. These employees therefore take their reduced working hours around Christmas and New Year, during the winter holidays in primary schools, in the week before Easter, and through extended time off in the summer.

Key responsibilities and duties:

• Works in the upbringing and education of preschool children with special needs.
• Making plans, providing training, guidance and support for children with special needs.
• Organises and manages special educational provision in close collaboration with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator.
• Collaborates with parents and professionals on the child's welfare.
• Works to develop school operations in collaboration with management and colleagues.
• Other tasks as per the job description and as assigned by a superior.

Educational and competency requirements:

• A teaching licence (licence to accompany the application) or a university degree in occupational therapy and a professional licence as such.
• Experience in similar roles is desirable.
• Good communication skills
• Initiative in work and professional ambition
• Independent and organised working methods
• Interest in working with children
• Good knowledge of Icelandic
