Fjarðarhraun – construction of a path and utility pipes

The estimated period of implementation is 1 June 2025 – 1 June 2026

Construction is underway on a main road through Fjarðarhraun, from Flatahraun alongside Bæjarhraun to the junction of Fjarðarhraun and the Hafnarfjarðarveg. The project is scheduled to be carried out in several phases from June to June in 2025 and 2026.

Crossings and connections to older trail networks

The project involves the construction of a main trail, as well as the installation of a district heating system and high-voltage cables. Crossings will be constructed at Flatahraun, Bæjarhraun and Hólshraun, along with connections to the existing trail network:

• A footpath crossing over Fjarðarhraun towards Hjallahraun, connecting to the main trail.
• A crossing of Bæjarhraun at Drangahraun, connecting both the current Hafnarfjörður trail network and the main trail.
• A footpath laid out along the southern side of Hólshraun, between Bæjarhraun and Kaplahraun, with a connection to the main trail.
• Paths in Garðabær, by Lynghólar and Hraunhólar, will be connected to the main path.

Street description of all parts of the main street

The main road will be signposted throughout, with particular guidance at junctions. The lighting will be connected to the street lighting systems of Garðabær and Hafnarfjörður. Existing lamp posts will be removed where necessary and new ones installed. Three roundabouts – at Flatahraun, Bæjarhraun and Hólshraun – will be individually lit. The lighting connections will be as follows:

• At Bæjarhraun 18, the lighting is connected to the street lighting of Hafnarfjörður.
• At Hraunhólar, it connects to the Garðabær footpath.

New and refurbished district heating pipes

Hot water pipes will be laid from Bæjarhraun 4 to Hraunhólar, and the older pipes between Hólshraun and Kaplahraun will be replaced. A new pipe will also be laid across Fjarðarhraun at Hraunhólar. It is planned to lay high-voltage cables and telecommunications ducts in the path's right-of-way. High-voltage cables will be laid from Bæjarhraun 4 to a connection at Hraunhólar and onwards to the Hafnarfjarðarveg. In Hólshraun, a culvert will be laid crossing Bæjarhraun and reaching to Kaplahraun. A new fibre-optic duct will also be laid for a communications cable at Hólshraun, and changes will be made to the traffic lights, including the relocation of light fittings.
