The Hafnarfjörður map for a more vibrant town
Nearly 15 million of the Hafnarfjörður Card's 34 million turnover has been spent on goods and services from Hafnarfjörður businesses since the card was launched just over a month ago, on 18 December.
„This is just the beginning,“ says Þóra Hrund Guðbrandsdóttir, managing director of the Marketing Bureau of Hafnarfjörður, about the first month of the Hafnarfjörður Card, which is a gift and loyalty card valid in sixty local businesses.
„We see that every single company that was brought into the group before the New Year has been shopped at,“ says Thora Hrund, describing how the card is used.
With a key to Hafnarfjörður in my pocket
„People have the card in their wallet on their phone. It's not just a gift voucher but also a payment solution,“ she says, encouraging all Hafnarfjörður residents to get the Hafnarfjörður Card. „We are taking the first steps and are developing the card to offer various benefits that are only available with the Hafnarfjörður Card,“ says Þóra Hrund.
Mayor Valdimar Víðisson says the Hafnarfjörður Card is a great way to support the town's shops and services. „It's a simple way for all of us to support our own businesses and keep value here at home in Hafnarfjörður.“
Þóra Hrund says that to begin with, the focus was on getting as many partners as possible. „I set myself the goal of getting 50 companies on board before Christmas, but we reached 60. That number is growing, as the card is great for the businesses here in town. Millions are at stake, so it's an ideal opportunity for businesses to get involved and offer good deals.“
Food most popular, but speciality products also strong
Þóra Hrund says it is very important that you can buy groceries with the card. „The top companies before Christmas sold groceries, but then speciality goods came on strong. For example, Lindex and Gina here in Hafnarfjörður have over 200 transactions before Christmas. I calculated that in the first three weeks we were on air, 56.41% went on groceries and 43.61% on speciality items. It will be interesting to see how sales develop now that Christmas is over,“ she says.

Thóra Hrund says the Marketing Bureau's aim is to promote a diverse range of industries in Hafnarfjörður and to increase retail. „We want to increase trade within the town. This is one part of the journey to strengthen local shops and services and to encourage trade and unity,“ she says.
Key figures
„This also strengthens the Marketing Bureau, as the card gives it a stronger purpose and increases the value of membership for companies. We are increasing the number of member companies in the Marketing Bureau, which creates an even stronger business community in Hafnarfjörður.“
