17th June in Hafnarfjörður
The people of Hafnarfjörður enjoyed the 17th of June into the evening. Many families had fun together and enjoyed the day. It could be said that although the programme was packed, long and with much on offer, umbrellas characterised the day on this national holiday.
The parade went ahead, the entertainment on Thorsplan went ahead, and so did the fun and the atmosphere. Rec Media captured the day in photos and videos.
Mayor congratulated the community
Mayor Valdimar Víðisson gave a festive speech, saying there was little better than standing with everyone here in the heart of Hafnarfjörður – and seeing the town bustling with life.
„We live in a town where we know each other, wish each other a good day and chat in the queue at the bakery. We have a community where people look out for one another, where diversity is a strength and the warmth is genuine. And that shines through in the whole celebration today,“ he said, adding that the amazing programme reflected this.
„National Day is also a day when we look inwards a little. We remember what was, those who laid the foundations, but also what we want to preserve and build upon. It's easy to forget that in the rush of everyday life – but our community doesn't just exist; it is created, day by day, by people like you.“

Valdimar Víðisson gave the speech.
Enjoy, praise and lengthen the day
He urged the people of Hafnarfjörður to enjoy the day. To praise one another. „This is the day when we give each other a little extra warmth. It never goes to waste,“ he said.
„I have to admit – I love these days. Seeing our town come to life, seeing families together, hearing laughter echo between the houses and feeling that special atmosphere that only Hafnarfjörður can create. It's one of those days you want to make last, to stretch out like a lovely summer's evening.“
