The concentration of particulate matter in the capital region is high due to sandblasting from the sands of South Iceland. Monitors in Hafnarfjörður are at Norðurhóll and Hvaleyrarhóll. At midday today, the hourly particulate matter concentration at Norðurhóll was 132.4 micrograms per cubic metre, but by 1 p.m. it had fallen to 8.8 micrograms per cubic metre.
