The art-music duo, consisting of Una Mist and Kristijonas, are working with sound art, music and instrument-making as part of this year's Creative Summer Jobs in Hafnarfjörður. „The aim of the „Omstaður“ project is to use music and sound to explore the relationship between humans and their environment, to support sustainability in artistic creation, and to research regional soundscapes.“

Create instruments from clay, shells and old toys

„This summer, we have been collecting materials from all over, both from nature and from flea markets, and we aim to build new and unique instruments from what we find. We have also been on numerous field trips, recording sounds from nature and the city that we will use as material for our music composition. On the 17th of June, we set up an installation at the Innovation Centre by the Stream. We displayed two new instruments that we made from clay, shells and old toys.“

Supernatural sound worlds

Una Mist is a music producer and instrument maker from Reykjavík and is currently completing her BA in New Media Composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. She draws inspiration from her natural environment and uses materials she finds to build electronic instruments. In her music composition, she plays with human emotions and digital sound design to create unique and sometimes supernatural soundscapes.

Nature and city life provide inspiration

Kristijonas Groblys is a musician and sound engineer from Vilnius, Lithuania. He is currently completing his BA in Art of Sound at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague in the Netherlands. He has experience in sound technology, recording engineering and sound design. He often uses sound recordings he collects from various environments and spaces, both from nature and urban life, as material for his musical compositions.

Premiere of the summer's harvest

„Ultimately, we want to perform at a concert where we showcase the project's results, play our instruments and premiere the music.“

There is certainly no shortage of creativity among these young people; we strongly encourage you to follow the project and for further information about the concerts as the date approaches.

About Creative Summer Jobs 2025

In the summer of 2021, the City of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the city's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-25 were also invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different artistic fields that would also liven up the town's social life, delighting tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of the Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Work Camp, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests. Þorbjörg Signý Ágústsson is the project manager for Creative Summer Jobs.

This year, there are nine diverse projects operating as part of the Creative Summer Jobs scheme, and they will be featured weekly over the summer.
