Fees in Hafnarfjörður to be lowered on 1 May
The Hafnarfjörður Town Council unanimously agreed at its meeting last week to lower the council's tariffs from 1 May 2024. Hafnarfjörður was one of the first municipalities to announce last autumn that tariff increases for the turn of the year would be reviewed if the terms of the collective agreement warranted it.
3% increase in the tariff rate instead of 9.9%
The Hafnarfjörður Town Council unanimously agreed at its meeting last week to lower the council's tariffs from 1 May 2024. Hafnarfjörður was one of the first municipalities to announce last autumn that rate increases for the turn of the year would be reviewed if collective agreements provided grounds for it. A review has taken place, and general rate charges will be reduced from the beginning of May.
„In March, the Hafnarfjörður town council agreed that the town's general fee schedules would be reviewed and would not increase by more than 3%, should the outcome of the collective bargaining agreements warrant it. We are standing by our word and will be lowering our tariffs from 1 May,“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður.
Clear message – a joint effort
The decision reflects the will of the municipal authorities in Hafnarfjörður to keep charges to a minimum and, at the same time, contribute to the community's efforts to bring down interest rates and inflation. The city's revenue is expected to fall by almost 36 million króna from the amount forecast in the 2024 budget, and a supplementary budget will be drawn up as a result.
„It is in all our interests that a national consensus is reached on long-term collective agreements, because only through a joint effort can we bring down interest rates and inflation. This decision is our contribution to that effort.“ says Rósa.
