The City of Hafnarfjörður celebrates its 116th anniversary today, Saturday, 1 June 2024. The municipality was granted borough status on 1 June 1908. Hafnarfjörður has grown and thrived over its 116 years. A year after receiving its town rights, on 1 June 1909, the town had a population of 1,469, with 109 children enrolled in its primary school.

At the start of the year, the population was just under 32,000, and there are over 6,000 pupils in the borough's nursery and primary schools. There are celebrations in the town, and residents of Hafnarfjörður are being encouraged to celebrate the anniversary. Adults, however, are reminded not to get carried away by the birthday celebrations and to exercise their right to vote. The younger ones will find the fun at the Hafnarfjörður Library. They can get ready for the summer reading, princesses will be leading arts and crafts workshops in many languages, and Dr. Bæk will be there to check the bikes for the summer's adventures.
