On the actual day, everyone across the country is encouraged to have a fun day and thereby raise awareness of the fight against cancer in men.

A few light-hearted sayings from the forge of Mottumars

  • A cold body unless introduced.
  • People thrive best when they are active.
  • A man's fun is a man's delight.
  • Everyone has their own skeleton to shake

About the initiative

Movember is the Cancer Society's annual campaign in the fight against cancer in men.. This year, the focus is on the value of exercise as a preventative measure against cancer. Regular exercise has an unequivocal value for general health and well-being, and its benefits are manifold. Research has conclusively shown that exercise reduces the risk of certain cancers and a variety of other diseases. Regular exercise also has a positive effect on people diagnosed with cancer; on average, those who exercise before and/or after diagnosis fare better. Therefore, regular exercise has a wide range of beneficial effects. One in three men will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. The Cancer Society maintains the website The Gents' Club which is dedicated to men and cancer. The website features a variety of educational materials specifically for men. You can also sign up for the Men's Club and receive personalised emails several times a year with information and encouragement.

How is the Cancer Society's fundraising money spent?

Financial support from the public and businesses is fundamental to the Cancer Society's ability to operate, as its activities are self-funded. Your donation supports:

  • Free advice from nurses, psychologists and social workers, and support for those diagnosed with cancer and their families.
  • Icelandic cancer research, which includes the causes of cancer, prevention, treatment and the quality of life of patients.
  • Various types of preventative education, courses and activities aimed at, amongst other things, reducing the risk of cancer and improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with the disease.
  • Use of patient and family accommodation, advocacy and support at 6 service offices nationwide.
