Hvammur is advertising for the post of Assistant Headteacher of the nursery school.

We are looking for an individual with excellent communication and collaboration skills, a desire to develop nursery practice, who is organised and driven by improvement, and has the ambition to achieve success in the role. It is important that the person is a professional leader, solution-oriented and positive. Must have the ambition to build a positive school ethos and a creative nursery practice that is in constant development in collaboration with all parties within the school community. This is a 100% post, while the management role of Deputy Head Teacher is 50%. 

Hvammur is a six-class nursery school in the south town of Hafnarfjörður. The school's values are Positive communication, equality and friendship and are reflected in all the nursery's work. At Hvammur, we work in the spirit of the Hjalli approach, and the nursery's groups are organised by age and gender. The nursery uses open-ended and creative materials that are the same across all groups, ensuring all children have equal access to the space and play equipment. At Hvammur, the developmental philosophy 'Parenting for Responsibility' is used, which encourages a sense of responsibility and self-control. Furthermore, the philosophy helps staff to standardise their approach to communication and discipline, and to foster friendship.

The aim of the Education and Public Health Department is to be a professional and progressive force in education, youth and sports affairs, to provide children and families in the town with a comprehensive service, and to promote continuity in all its work, with the well-being of residents as its guiding principle.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Works towards and is responsible for, together with the nursery manager, ensuring that the nursery school's work is carried out in accordance with the National Curriculum for Early Years and the nursery's own curriculum, that plans for this are made, and that regular evaluation takes place.
  • Assistant to the head teacher and their deputy.
  • Manages the day-to-day organisation of the school's operations, together with the nursery manager.
  • Guides the professional work of each department and provides early support to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Manages communication and collaboration with parents in consultation with the nursery manager.
  • Attends parents' meetings, which are held by the nursery school

Educational and competency requirements:

  • Teacher's licence (copy of licence to be attached to the application)
  • Experience of working in a nursery and nursery teaching is a requirement.
  • Postgraduate education in management or education and/or pedagogy is an advantage.
  • Management experience is an advantage.
  • Initiative in work and professional ambition
  • Independent and organised working methods
  • Good teamwork and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of Icelandic, C1, according to the language standard. ETM Self-Assessment Framework
  • Good computer skills

A clean criminal record is a condition.
