Seltjarnarnes — where the beauty is unparalleled!
The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður received a 13.6 million króna grant for the continued development of Seltún when Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Culture and Commerce, allocated funds from the Development Fund for Tourist Sites for the year 2024. This time, 29 projects received a grant from the fund, totalling 538.7 million króna. The grants are spread throughout the country.
As stated on the website of the Prime Minister's Office, the Development Fund for Tourist Sites operates in accordance with Act No. 75/2011. The fund's objective is to promote the development, maintenance and protection of tourist sites. Also to achieve a more even distribution of tourists across the country and to support regional development. The projects receiving funding this year involve a wide range of developments across the country, including in the areas of safety, nature conservation, and infrastructure. Many of the projects are defined in the destination plan for their region and are developed based on the priorities of the local community.
29 grants around the country
„This year's grants are going to projects all around the country, large and small, all of which matter. The development is in line with the new tourism policy and action plan for 2030 that I have presented to the Althingi, which is based on a holistic vision for each region, among other things through local destination plans. With this support, we are promoting a better experience and accessibility for tourists, increased safety, and the protection of the country's sensitive nature. These are key elements of the sustainability of Icelandic tourism, which is our guiding principle,“ says the Minister. on the website of the Cabinet Office.
Seltjörn has received grants over the years. In 2017, a bound surface layer was laid on the car park, and the paths were also repaired. In 2018, work began on preparing for the expansion of the toilets, which included laying a water pipe from a borehole to Seltún. New toilets were opened in 2020. Walkways and areas for relaxation have also been created at the geothermal site on the bar. The ongoing development is now being supported by a grant.

One of the country's most beautiful natural gems
Seltún is in Krýsuvík. It is a very active area of volcanic craters and boreholes. There are walking trails, and both boardwalks and gravel paths have been renewed with funding from the Visitor Site Development Fund in recent years. Krýsuvík is one of Iceland's most beautiful natural gems, and the diverse palette of colours in the nature of the Seltún hot spring area captivates many. The maintenance of paths and the development of walking trails at this popular tourist site is a priority for the City of Hafnarfjörður, and there are plans for further development of facilities in the area in the coming years.
Yes, this is good news for all of us!
