The Fjarda team defeated the town councils in boccia.
The Fjarðar team won the annual Fjarðar Thorramót boccia tournament, which took place at the weekend. As usual, the town councils of Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær, and the board of ÍBH, were invited to take part. „The fun was by far the most important thing on the day,“ says Þröstur Erlingsson, chairman of the Fjarðar sports club, reassuring the councillors who were unsuccessful in winning a medal at the competition.
A broad smile at the weekend's boccia tournament
The team of Kristín Ágústa, Dóra and Hlynur from Fjarðar won the annual Fjarðar Þorramót boccia tournament, which took place at the weekend. The ÍBH board team came second, and Raggi, Siggi and Valli came third. Ingibjörg, Birna and Sigurjón were in fourth place. All teams were from Fjarðar. There was fierce competition with good humour, much laughter and strengthened bonds. As is tradition, the councils of Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær, and the board of ÍBH, were invited to take part. None of the teams from these councils managed to place higher than fifth, despite their competitive spirit.
„I had to admit defeat in the end and I have to admit that my strengths lie in other areas. What a performance and skill in the sport. inside the Fjord. This is always just as much fun.“ says Valdimar Víðisson who He led the Hafnarfjörður town council team. Valdimar adds: „I was top of my class in my team anyway.".“
Charitable annual competition
„The fun was the most important thing on the day,“ says Thröstur Erlingsson, chairman of the sports club Fjarðar. „It means a lot to our members to compete against the town councillors. There's a great deal of excitement about the day and it's tremendous fun. Our members get really excited about having the councillors visit,“ he says.
The representatives of Fjarðar have a good lead over the town councillors. Boccia training takes place twice a week. Members of Fjarðar also train in swimming up to seven times a week, as well as in athletics and weightlifting.
„There's plenty to do,“ describes Thröstur, adding that around 60 people take part in sports with Fjörður. Everyone is welcome to come and give it a go. „Yes, just get in touch and turn up,“ he says, although there are currently no spaces available for the boccia training and there is a waiting list. However, the sports offer a great deal to disabled people. He knows this from his own daughter, who has been taking part in sports for many years.
The aim is to get more people to training.
„It's difficult to get disabled children to take part in sports. 41% of disabled children do, and we're trying to reverse this trend. It's so important,“ says Thröstur. A day like Saturday is an important link in that. It builds a fun relationship with the town councillor.
