A great conference has ended
A seminar on literacy, 'Reading is the Game of Life', was held yesterday, attended by nearly 900 staff from Hafnarfjörður's nursery and primary schools.
Yesterday a seminar on literacy for staff of nursery and primary schools in Hafnarfjörður was held on their planning day. Nearly 900 nursery and primary school staff, as well as guests, attended the event, and there was widespread satisfaction with the lectures and workshops on offer.
The seminar was part of the town's literacy project, which was launched last year. The project aims to promote and support pupils' learning through comprehensive measures based on assessments, screenings and interventions in reading throughout the nursery and primary school.
The session was opened by the chair, Ingibjörg Einarsdóttir, office manager at the School Office. Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Chair of the Education Committee, addressed the conference and said, among other things: „We have everything we need in Hafnarfjörður to improve academic achievement and be at the forefront, – excellent staff, schools and students, and we need to find out what can be done to improve academic achievement – and respond immediately and responsibly by getting on with the job. And that is certainly being done with this well-crafted and thorough literacy project that has been launched in Hafnarfjörður.“
The symposium was based on two keynote lectures by Dr Hermundur Sigmundsson and Dr Freyja Birgisdóttir. Following these, four themed workshops were held, organised by the students' ages and the staff's areas of work, with several presentations given in each.
