At the meeting of the Hafnarfjörður Town Council, which is currently underway, a detailed plan for Ásvallabraut, a road connecting Ásland and Velli, was approved.
„The Ásvallabrautin is a major transport improvement, not just for motorists but also for pedestrians and cyclists, as cycle paths will be laid alongside the road. Talks are now underway with Landsnet about the relocation of electricity pylons that run on the edge of the Vallahverfið district, the relocation of the lines and Ásvallabrautin opens up new possibilities for the neighbourhood and allows us to resume development in Skarðshlíðin,“ says Ólafur Ingi Tómasson, chairman of the Planning and Building Council.
Thirteen years have passed since the first resident moved into the Vallahverfið district. The district has grown rapidly and now has a population of around 4,900. Vellir is a district that has everything to offer; the area features amenities, a swimming pool, a sports centre and a strong school community.
With the introduction of Ásvallabraut, the Vellir area is connected to Áslandið. The road will run from Lindartorg, the final roundabout on Ásvallabraut in Ásvallir, over the ridge between Ásfjall and Vatnshlíð, which are well-known landmarks in the area, and will connect to Kaldárselsveg via the junction with Brekkuás.
„This connects the two newest neighbourhoods in the town, and we now have a route that will serve future building sites,„ says Ólafur Ingi.
The Ásvallabrautin will be put out to tender in the spring, and the work is scheduled to be completed in 2017.
