It is valuable and important for every community to have strong sports clubs and individuals within its ranks who, through their voluntary work, have built and continue to build a professional and excellent programme specifically designed to encourage people of all ages to take up exercise and improve their health. The importance of sport and its impact on society are manifold. Sports not only contribute to better health and improved well-being, but they also play a major role in the prevention of crime among children and young people, the productivity of employees of all ages, social participation, and a healthy lifestyle in the long term.
Sport has long been a part of the culture of the City of Hafnarfjörður. From our ranks comes a large group of elite athletes in a wide variety of fields, who make our hearts beat in time and our Hafnarfjörður pride soar. Achieving athletes who are good role models for our young people and a walking example that dreams can come true. These are individuals who have grown up within the ranks of, for example, Haukar, individuals who have received the right framework, training and encouragement. The football club Haukar has certainly fulfilled its role with honour for the 85 years it has existed.
I am proud of the achievements of our athletes from Hafnarfjörður. I am proud of the community that the Haukamenn have built up at Ásvellir. Above all, I am proud of the individuals who take an active part in organised work as volunteers, for the sake of their interest and joy.
