Eclipse Festival in Víðistaðatún
„Yes, it's sold out,“ says Alexis Garcia, of Garcia Events, who has contracted with the City of Hafnarfjörður to hold a music festival in Víðistaðatún when the solar eclipse takes place on 12 August. The festival is unique.
„There, 7,000 people will enjoy watching Björk DJ. This is an electronic music festival and 80% of the guests come from abroad,“ says Alexis.
„And they really do come from all over; Australia, Brazil, Colombia, the United States and European countries. It's fantastic,“ says Alexis. But the weather?
„We have little control over that, but every ticket comes with specially designed solar eclipse glasses that we designed with Björk and her daughter, Döda, who is in charge of the visual world for the festival.“
Mayor Thórður Thórarinsson says it is an absolute pleasure to witness the flourishing cultural life in Hafnarfjörður during his first days in office.
„It's perfectly clear that this is where the adventures happen, here in Hafnarfjörður. The people of Hafnarfjörður can truly be proud of the development over the past few years. I would like to congratulate Smekkleysa on its 40th anniversary and I'm really looking forward to seeing Björk here in Hafnarfjörður.“
Alexis describes how visitors can sit down in the area's art workshops and design their own mask in the style of Björk. „Björk always has custom-designed masks, after all,“ says Alexis.
Organisers are excited. „We are very excited, this is a unique event and those who attend will never experience another like it. This is unique worldwide. Interest is very high and a huge number of foreign journalists want to come.“
Alexis says Víðistaðatún is a great fit for the event. „It's complicated to find a flat area in the capital region where this is possible. Víðistaðatún as an event site is spacious, and the City of Hafnarfjörður has been helpful in making everything work. Everything has gone so well,“ he says.
„We are working hard to inform the residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods and will be holding a residents“ information session in the near future. I hope that Víðistaðatún will become such an event venue in the future. It's a superb area for an event like this. The surroundings are so beautiful and there are plenty of escape routes, even though the area is beautifully framed by lava fields and hills.“
