The harbour, outdoor activities and town life meet

The North Shore in Hafnarfjörður has undergone a transformation in recent years. What was once primarily a harbour area has gradually given way to a vibrant urban space where residential areas, outdoor recreation and the harbour coexist, creating a unique environment by the sea. 

A diverse outdoor recreational area that creates connections  

Hafnarfjarðarhöfn has overseen extensive works in the area in close cooperation with the City of Hafnarfjörður. The aim of the project has been to strengthen the coastline, improve safety and accessibility, and create a diverse outdoor recreational area that connects the North Shore even better with the centre of Hafnarfjörður and onwards to Flensborg Harbour.  

Accessible all year round  

The final finishing of the North Garden marks an important milestone in the development. The garden was poured in concrete, reinforced and clad with timber decking.  Good access to the park was created, large seating areas and a viewing platform were built, and facilities for anglers were provided. A new 5-metre-high lighthouse was installed at the far end of the park, and recessed lighting was fitted throughout the entire area. At the same time, the coastal path has been further developed so that residents and visitors can enjoy walking and cycling routes along the sea all year round. What makes the North Quay special is that the area has retained its harbour character despite extensive development. Here, the harbour's operations, small boats, fishing vessels and the ever-growing waterfront life still coexist. At the same time, a new neighbourhood has emerged where residents, visitors and tourists enjoy staying, walking and experiencing the harbour area in a new way.

Where the sea, history and the way of life form a strong whole  

The history of the North Shore also reflects the development of Hafnarfjörður itself. The natural harbour laid the foundation for the town's development and still plays a key role in its industrial and social life. Through targeted development, it has been possible to create an area where the history of the harbour and a vision for an attractive town environment go hand in hand. 

The North Shore is therefore not only a hub of activity but a new destination in Hafnarfjörður, where the sea, history and the local life form a strong whole, inviting both residents and visitors to enjoy one of the most beautiful harbour areas in the country.
