Spring festival and exhibition for the 100th anniversary of Kaldársel

The Hafnarfjörður Folk Museum has opened an exhibition of photographs from the KFUM/K summer camps at Kaldársel in Hellisgerði. The occasion is that this year marks their 100th anniversary.

The Kaldársel anniversary summer festival will be held tomorrow, Thursday, 29th May, on St. John's Eve. A varied programme will be on offer at Kaldársel from 11:00 to 16:00.

The programme officially begins at 11:00 in Kaldársel.

  • 11:00 A flag-raising ceremony, followed immediately by a leisurely historical walk through the local area led by Thorarin Björnsson.
  • 12:00 Sausages and more will be available throughout the day, while stocks last.
  • 13:00 An outdoor gathering where Ásgeir Páll Ágústsson leads a sing-along and the Reverend Petrína Mjöll Jóhannesdóttir gives a sermon.
  • 14:00 Two walks: Helgafell and Fosshellir-Valaból.
A talk about Kaldársel, past and present, in words and pictures, given several times throughout the day.
  • Also a rolling slideshow and a short film from 1948.

Bouncy castles will be on site and, of course, the natural surroundings offer exciting opportunities for free play.

Photographic exhibition in Hellisgerði

And back to the exhibition at Hellisgerði. Svanhvít Tryggvadóttir, a specialist at the Folk Museum, organised it for the anniversary. She says it features many photographs.

„They sent us pictures from 1925 to the present day, and now there are six signs. Five of them span every 20 years,“ she says. „The final sign is an honorary sign for cook Sigrún Sumarrós Jónsdóttir and director Benedikt Arnkelsson. They spent almost 50 summers at the Kaldársel summer camp,“ says Svanhvít.

Free at Hellisgerði. Also at the spring festival in Kaldársel, but voluntary donations are welcome.

A huge congratulations on the baby at the summer camp!
