National swimming campaign launched at Ásvallarlaug

Let's all sin together 

Syndum – a national swimming campaign, was officially launched for the fifth time yesterday, Monday 3rd November, at our Ásvallalaug pool. On this occasion, swimming champions from Hafnarfjörður dived into the pool to the sound of applause.

Swimmers in Hafnarfjörður have been very diligent in logging their distances in 'Syndum' in recent years. Ásvallalaug had the most kilometres swum in both 2023 and 2024.

„This is the fifth time the initiative has been launched. Last year we swam 32,171 km. We're going to top that this year. That's about 24 laps around the country that we're swimming. Fantastic,“ said Willum Þór Þórsson, President of the IOC, as he launched the initiative.

Syndum is a swimming health and motivational campaign that runs from 1st to 30th November. The aim of Syndum is to encourage the public to be more active in their daily lives. The campaign is supported by the European Commission as part of European Sports Week.

Valdimar Víðisson, the mayor, also gave a speech at the opening. He spoke to the children who were eagerly waiting to launch the initiative. He said that swimming is one of the best sports there is.

„Swimming boosts self-confidence, strengthens the body and soul, and gives people of all ages the opportunity to engage in healthy and beneficial exercise,“ he points out. It is no coincidence that Hafnarfjörður places great emphasis on improving facilities for swimming.

„We are investing. The outdoor area at Ásvallalaug will be expanded in the coming years with new pools and relaxation areas, and work will continue to make this facility even better for both elite athletes and the general public.“

He encourages the people of Hafnarfjörður to swim together, swim for their health and swim for the joy.
