Hvaleyrarskóli is looking for a driven and dynamic special needs teacher.

Hvaleyrarskóli has around 370 pupils in Years 1 to 10. The school's motto is responsibility, courtesy and cooperation, which is reflected in all school activities. The school works according to the SMT school skills model, with an emphasis on positive communication and a constructive learning environment. Hvaleyrarskóli is also a health-promoting school and works with the Olweus anti-bullying programme. Hvaleyrarskóli is a school of diversity, where multiculturalism, creative work and a variety of teaching methods are nurtured.

The school works according to the SMT, Olweus, beginning literacy and word by word philosophies, with an emphasis on chess and drama/dance instruction.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Providing specialist tuition for pupils in collaboration with school management, form tutors and parents.
  • Working on the development of school practice with an emphasis on teamwork and professional collaboration
  • Promote the welfare of students in collaboration with parents and other professionals.
  • Working in accordance with the school's policy and the SMT's school skills, with the aim of ensuring safety and a positive atmosphere.

Educational and competency requirements:

  • Teaching licence (to be included with the application)
  • Teaching experience and knowledge of a variety of teaching methods.
  • Experience of tutoring desirable
  • Initiative, organised working methods and independence in work
  • Positivity and an interest in a creative and ambitious environment
  • Interest in team teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Very good Icelandic skills, at a minimum C1 according to criteria of the European Language Portfolio
  • Agility and positivity in communication
  • Extensive computer skills and good knowledge of Mentor
