The Office of Education and Public Health is seeking a speech and language therapist to contribute to targeted, integrated services. The emphasis is on good collaboration between professionals and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the well-being of children. The Education and Public Health Department provides a professional environment where ambition, trust, and a solution-focused approach are prioritised. Staff are also supported and given opportunities for development, including through training and professional development. Emphasis is placed on strong links with the school community, parents and other partners, both within and outside the local authority. The speech and language therapists of the Education and Public Health Department belong to the Advisory and Assessment Department. 

Key responsibilities and duties:  

  • Take the initiative in a professional approach to matters concerning children's speech and language development in the town's nursery and primary schools.
  • Advising primary school teachers and headteachers on language development, expression, comprehension, vocabulary, speech sound disorders, pragmatics, and the fundamentals of literacy. 
  • Provide advice to school staff on creating good language models and how to foster the need for turn-taking and expand vocabulary in play and in everyday situations. 
  • To analyse and assess the status of children's language development, communication, phonological system and pronunciation in nursery and primary schools. 
  • Data processing, report writing and handover meetings with guardians and teachers 
  • Advice for parents regarding language development, speech sound disorders and phonological difficulties 
  • Other duties as described in the job description 

Educational and competency requirements: 

  • Licence to practise as a speech and language therapist
  • With rights to the main diagnostic tools belonging to the field of speech and language therapy
  • Experience as a speech and language therapist in nursery and primary schools
  • Experience in analysis, consultancy and training
  • Knowledge of interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in teams
  • Ability to organise, initiative and independence in work methods
  • Good general computer skills
  • Very good Icelandic skills
