Come out for a walk every Wednesday this summer
Guided town walks will be offered every Wednesday this summer. Most walks take about an hour, participation is free and all are welcome. The walks are a collaboration between Hafnarfjörður Library, the Hafnarfjörður Folk Museum, Hafnarborg and Healthy Town of Hafnarfjörður. Come out for a walk!
3 June at 8 pm - The Music and Town Life
Jónatan Garðarsson leads the first walk of the summer, around the centre of Hafnarfjörður. We recall the strong connection between music and the town's life. We will discuss Friðrik Bjarnason, the Song Festival at Hafnarborg, church music, Vinaminni, the youth ball, Skiphól, Skútuna, the Heart of Hafnarfjörður and much more. The walk will start from Hafnarborg.
10. June at 5 pm – Storytelling and fun
Hugrún Margrét leads hA Christmas chair and pram-friendly walk from Flensburg down to Ola Run Farm. Participants will get together to create all sorts of tall tales. Down at the farm, the stories will be read aloud, followed by classic outdoor games and a light refreshment. The walk will set off from Flensburg.

24 June at 8 pm – The Trails of the Common Woman
Valgerður Sigurðardóttir leads a walk through the historical sites of the common woman in Hafnarfjörður. The lives, circumstances and history of women in the town in times past will be examined. The walk will take you through the west town, pausing at places connected to the daily lives and history of the women in the area. Before the walk begins, visitors will have the opportunity to view a new exhibition about the working-class woman in the shed at Siggubær. The walk will start from Siggubær, 10 Kirkjuvogur.
1st July at 5 p.m. – Family walk in Valaból
Kolbrún Kristínardóttir is leading a family-friendly walk to Valaból in the Helgafell area. Valaból is an old resting place with a cave and fun climbing trees, where a picnic break will be taken before heading back. The route is easy to walk and is about 5 km in total. The walk will start from the car park on Kaldárselsveg.
8th July at 5 pm – Plant-themed and singing trail for families
Búi Bjarmar and Hrefna Lind lead a lively and fun family walk, stopping at interesting places around the town. We will look at plants and other exciting things we come across. Walking, nature and singing are woven together in a creative way. The walk will depart from Hafnarborg.
15th July at 8 pm – The Harbour Area: Past and Present
Ludwig Geirsson will lead a walking tour of the harbour's history, where he will talk about the first voyages to Hafnarfjörður, the development of trade and merchant shipping, the construction of harbour facilities, current operations and upcoming projects in the harbour area. The walk will start from the Packhouse of the Folk Museum.
Hildur Aðalsteinsdóttir is leading a walk around Ástjörn with a stop at Ásfjall. A comfortable route with a little hill-climbing, as Ásfall is 128m high. A beautiful route with a good view over our town. The walk is 5 km with 139 metres of ascent. The walk will start from the Haukahús at Ásvellir.
29 July at 8 pm – The sports town of Hafnarfjörður
Björn Pétursson will lead a walk through the centre of Hafnarfjörður. The sporting history of the town over the past few decades will be highlighted. Throughout its history, Hafnarfjörður has been called both „the sports town“ and „the handball town“. At the start of the walk, guests will be invited to view a new exhibition at the Museum of Local History's Packhouse, entitled „Hafnarfjörður: Handball Town“.“ The walk will start from the Packhouse of the Folk Museum.
5th August at 5 p.m. – Contemporary Vikings
Jökull Tandri Ámundason leads a gentle walk around the town. The talk will cover the Vikings of the Commonwealth era, pagan customs, and modern-day Vikings who are an active part of life in Hafnarfjörður. History, philosophy and entertainment go hand in hand on the walk. The walk will depart from Thorsplan.
Harpa Gústavsdóttir leads a gentle evening walk around Stórhöfði, south of Hvaleyrarvatn. It is a comfortable walking route with beautiful views over the surrounding area. The walk will start from the west end of Lake Hvaleyrarvatn.
19 August at 8 pm – Mindfulness walk at Hvaleyrarvatn
Bryndís Jóna Jónsdóttir is leading a walk near Hvaleyrarvatn. We are going to experience this natural gem through our senses. We will reflect together on what mindfulness entails, how we can be more present in our lives, promote better balance, and practise outdoors in nature. The walk will start from the west end of Lake Hvaleyrarvatn.
26 August at 5 pm – Hundred Years in Sléttuhlíð
Sveinn Magnússon will lead an informative walk around Sléttuhlíð, where he will talk about the history of the area, the people who lived there and the development of the summer house settlement. Particular attention will be paid to how the first summer houses were built in the area and how the pioneers began their summer stays there. The walk will start from Sléttuhlíð (C3).
