Unwanted items in sewers

Unwanted and inappropriate items in the toilets and drains in Hafnarfjörður are becoming a problem. The problem is not new but seems to have been pacing up in the recent weeks and months causing breakdowns of pumps and other equipment. All this leads to costs that otherwise could be used for the development and maintenance of the equipment. The situation has been especially bad in the district of Vellir recently and therefore enclosed messages is specifically tailored to residents and employees of companies in the district of Vellir. The content of the message does however belong and can be applied to all residents and employees of companies in Hafnarfjörður.

Dear residents and users of the sewer in the district of Vellir

Waste water from the district of Vellir í Hafnarfjörður runs through a small pumping stations next to Fléttuvellir and Klukkuvellir. From there, the waste water is pumped into collecting systems passing through the pump and the plant in Hraunavík, east of RioTintoAlcan in Straumsvík. In recent weeks, the pumps at Fléttuvellir have been blocked and damaged causing them to stop because hygiene (disposable cleaning cloths, rags etc.) that SHOULD NOT be flushed down go into the sewer system, coiling the impeller and causing discomfort for residents and high expenses for the sewer. Please read the labels on all products carefully and DO NOT dispose following material and products in the toilet and/or drains:

• mortar
• disposable scarves
• clothing
• cotton buds
• paints
• diapers
• sanitary napkins
• plastic bags
• solvents
• petrol
• oils
• spot and tapes
